The Company

The producers of both oils we are discussing today is a household name when it comes to essential oils and aromatherapy. Founded by D. Gary Young in 1993, their mission is to make therapeutic-grade oils available to everyone. They choose their farmers, distributors, distillers, and oils all by their own Seed to Seal® process, which follows every batch of essential oil from the time it is planted until the cap is secured.

As for their reputation, I can attest to the purity of their products. I own plenty, and I’m amazed at the wide range of issues they’ve helped me deal with.

Today, we’re going to look at two Young Living oils, Frankincense and Sacred Frankincense, which appear to be the same but aren’t.

Frankincense

It may seem like I’m starting here because it was the first one mentioned in the intro, but I like to do these comparisons alphabetically to keep everything fair. Since these two essential oils are so similar, I will do my best not to repeat any information.

What Is It?

In short, this essential oil goes as far back as the first essence pulled from the very first tree. If you were raised Catholic, then this scent might remind you of certain rituals, particularly at a funeral mass. This oil is the fragrance coming from the chained incense burner the priest swings around the draped coffin leaving behind smoke that smells musky and biblical.

Of course, there are reasons why aromas are used in religious ceremonies, and it’s because they bring about benefits that have been used as cures and treatments for everything from cuts to depression. In the case of our comparison today, we will discuss the benefits of this oil a little later. First, let’s learn about where it comes from.

Origins

Olibanum tree

This oil is extracted from olibanum trees, which are native to some parts of Africa and Asia. Scientifically known as Boswellia carteri, the oils we are talking about are steam distilled from the gum or resin of that tree. Once extracted to the purest form, its chemical composition consists of alpha-pinene, actanol, bornyl acetate, linalool, octyl acetate, incensole, and incensole acetate.

Benefits

I say we get right down to it, why should I use this essential oil? There are many reasons why you might want to add a little dark bottle of this scent to your collections. Let’s take a look at each one.

Person's arm with scars

Scar Reduction

Mix a few drops of this with some fractionated coconut or jojoba oil and make it a habit to rub some of this dilution to your scars in the morning and at bedtime. You’ll begin to see the remnant of your wound begin to lighten and possibly disappear.

Promotes A Healthy Mouth

When it comes to halitosis, sores in the mouth, toothaches, and any problems affecting the teeth or gums, a little bit of this that’s diluted well could have a positive impact. You can create your own toothpaste with it if you are feeling adventurous.

Immunity Booster

Due to its antiseptic properties, this extract is a powerful push for your internal fighting system known as the immunity. Even diffusing the scent for a little while can give your system the jump start it needs.

Gas stomach. Man wearing gray sweatshirt, blue pants touching his stomach in white background

Gets Rid of Gas

While this subject is uncomfortable for some, it is a fact of life and can be quite disruptive. Diffusing or topical application of this oil could do some wonderful things for when digestive systems get gassed up.

Aids in Digestion

Along the same lines as the last benefit we listed, this essential oil is a helper when it comes to digesting that big bowl of pasta you had at your favorite Italian restaurant. Diffusing this scent will help move the food along the gastrointestinal tract, which promotes healthy digestion.

Applying a nice dilution of this with a jojoba and a drop or two of lavender is a relaxing blend of oils that’ll diminish those laugh lines. On top of that, it will leave your skin looking refreshed and younger.

Helps with Respiratory Issues

Sometimes, we have trouble breathing whether its a cough from cold weather or a bought of bronchitis. When that happens, we will do what we can to alleviate our symptoms. This can help get phlegm unstuck from your respiratory tract.

Relaxer

I love this scent and have personally used it when I felt sad or anxious, which is fairly often. Just a few whiffs and I feel the world of worry melt away. I find that if you mix it with ylang-ylang the power of pleasure almost doubles.

In the same sense, this scent is a great addition to any meditation practice due to its ability to help one relax.

So Long Stretch Marks

Yes, those elastic looking marks on your side that were put there from giving birth to your favorite person in the world can fade with help from this scent. Just dilute it with a moisturizing carrier oil like avocado, and it’ll rub those marks away.

Of course, it won’t work like an eraser on a chalkboard but you will see the difference with regular application. Also, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a professional before applying anything topically.

Sacred Frankincense

Next, we have the kin to the first extract we’ve discussed, and while there are a ton of similarities, there are a few differences worth mentioning.

What Is It?

Frankincense resins in brown background

For the most part, this essential oil is no different from the first. It is steam distilled from the resin or sap of a tree by the same name. It is comprised of volatile organic compounds just like the ones we listed above.

Origins

A big difference is the actual tree this oil is extracted from is not the Boswellia carteri but from the Boswellia sacra, which is the kin to the first but not the same tree. According to Young Living, this oil is the more prized of the two. The reason why is because this species only grows in Oman, a country that sits on the coast of the Arabian Peninsula adjacent to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Benefits

I could list all the benefits of this oil but the truth is, they are exactly the same as the ones we listed above, and that would just be redundant and a waste of your time.

There is one difference in the advantages of this essence opposed to the one extracted from the trees in Yemen and Somalia. It is said that this version has the ability to aid one in reaching a heightened sense of spirituality.
